Keynote address: The carbon management journey in Saudi Arabia – Aramco’s perspective
Advancing human progress and economic development while tackling the global climate issue is the great challenge of our time. The transition to a low-carbon future will be a complex process. Alternatives will take significant time and sustained investment to meet a meaningful share of the rising global energy demand.
Our speaker will share insights on effective approaches for reducing and removing carbon emissions, focusing on major solutions pursued by the Oil and Gas industry, such as CO2 capture and storage, low-carbon hydrogen, low-carbon fuels, and offsetting solutions.

Strategic panel: Bridging the gap – Industry’s perspective for achieving carbon neutrality
Carbon neutrality is a critical goal for the petrochemical industry as it works towards reducing its impact on the environment and contributing to the fight against climate change. Though it is challenging for our industry, given its reliance on fossil fuels. The industry can take several steps towards achieving carbon neutrality, including investing in renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency in production processes, and developing and implementing new technologies on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), which can help capture CO2 emissions from industrial processes and store them underground. Through this session speakers will address:
- Challenges around quantifying emissions across the value chain, and in turn complications around efforts to achieve carbon neutrality the sector.
- The gap between where the world stands today and where it needs to be
- Factors affecting this – availability of natural resources; institutional, financial, and technical capabilities; and readiness
- Solutions for decarbonization

Establishment of the National Chemical Safety Program in Saudi Arabia
The explosion at the Port of Beirut in 2020 led to over 200 fatalities deaths, 7,000 injuries and around US$15 billion in property damage. This was a wake-up call for the global community. Saudi Arabia recognized the need early on to be proactive and drive a step-change at the national level in managing and mitigating chemical safety risks, and result in a safer and more environmentally friendly Saudi Arabia, aligned with Vision 2030.
Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC) on behalf of the National Center for Environmental Compliance (NCEC) and in collaboration with its partners is developing a holistic Chemical Management Program for Saudi Arabia covering health, safety, and environment hazards across the chemical lifecycle. The program builds on industry best practices while being fit-for-purpose to the context of Saudi Arabia and its regional & international agreements. To ensure sustainability and effectiveness in implementation the program targets regulatory, systems, organizational, governance and technology dimensions through a collaborative approach with key stakeholders. At the heart of the program is the Electronic Chemical Management Platform & Database, which leverages the latest technologies.
The objective of this session is to share the approach we are adopting to develop a self-sustaining best-in-class Chemical Management Program in Saudi Arabia.

Leadership fishbowl: Driving responsible care: Human factors – a critical aspect in performance excellence
Robust EHS&S programs aren’t just nice-to-haves, they’re key in maintaining optimal business resilience. Good technology combined with the best work systems can help to achieve these goals. The best work systems are based on having a skilled workforce, with well-designed jobs that are appropriate to individuals’ abilities. Biological, psychological and organisational factors at work can affect health and safety, but it also affects individual efficiency and productivity. When designing jobs, equipment and practices which are fit for people, a human factors (ergonomic) approach is the most ideal. Through this session, speakers will address how reducing errors and influencing behaviour is key in understanding EHS’s approach to human factors. We will also discuss issues surrounding human factors in relation to major hazards and share examples of good and bad practice in an effort to raise awareness.

Panel discussion: Critical link between ESG and EHS&S to future-proof your business
As we navigate the complexities of the modern industrial landscape, the convergence of Environmental, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S), sustainability, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria, and the principles of Responsible Care becomes increasingly pivotal. This session is dedicated to exploring this intricate interplay and its profound implications for the industry at large.
Through this session, we will explore:
Sustainability and ESG: Understanding the broader implications of sustainability and how ESG criteria are reshaping industry standards and stakeholder expectations.
The Heart of Responsible Care: Embracing the ethos of Responsible Care to drive continuous improvement in all facets of operations. Merging the principles of EHS&S with sustainability under the Responsible Care initiative can lead to more holistic, impactful programs that benefit not just the industry but society at large.
Beyond Reputation to Responsibility: While sustainability reporting manages reputational risks, its intersection with EHS&S, especially under Responsible Care, underscores a commitment to genuine environmental, health, and safety improvements.
Evolving Sustainability in the Chemicals industry: How can the chemical industry move from basic sustainability practices to truly embedding these principles, in line with the Responsible Care ethos?
